In memory of F. Mompou and his wife C. Bravo.

This year marks the 50th anniversary of "Phonos", a pioneering center in the field of electronic and electroacoustic music in our region. As a tribute and recognition of “Phonos” long and continuous career, this year the work for this Young Composer Competition must be for violin, cello and electronics trio.


Rules

Any composer who is no older than 35 on 31 December 2024 can participate in this competition.

The works must be completely unknown. They must not have been previously performed, published or disseminated in any format.

The style and scoring methods of the work are completely unrestricted. The recommended duration is between 10 and 18 minutes.


Award

The Frederic Mompou International Award for 2024 consists of:

  • Prize money of €3,000. This sum will be subject to Spanish taxation.
  • Premiere of the work.

The Frederic Mompou International Award cannot be shared or declared void.

The jury reserves the right to award two honorary mentions.

This year's winner cannot compete again until the competition of 2027.

Joventuts Musicals de Barcelona reserves the right to publish and disseminate the score.


How to send the scores

  • The scores will be presented anonymously: a pseudonym must be used.
  • No slogan or pseudonym may be used that identifies the composer or the work presented.
  • Incomplete scores will not be accepted. All scores presented must be legible at first sight and sound files must be suitable for listening.
  • A score that is badly written may be refused.
  • Files A)
    Send the score in 1 PDF file. The electronic part must be submitted as an audio file in wav format at 48.000 hz/24 bits or 44.100 hz/16 bits, in a stereo version. The name of these two files A) must be the title of your work.


  • File B)
    Send 1 PDF file with the fully-completed entry form, passport or identity card and a brief curriculum vitae. The name of this file B) must be your pseudonym.

    Files A) and B) must be compressed using RAR or ZIP, in only one file, and sent via WeTransfer to mompouaward@jmbarcelona.com


    Presentation deadline: Thursday, October 31, 2024 (incl.).


  • Jury and verdict

    The jury will be made up of five professionals of recognised prestige in the world of contemporary music. Their identity will be disclosed when the verdict is made public.

    The decision of the jury will be taken by absolute majority and the verdict will not be open to appeal.

    If, once the verdict has been reached, it is found that the winning work or its author has not complied with all the rules, the composer will be stripped of the award.

    The verdict will be announced before December 31, 2024.

    Award-winning work

    Once the verdict has been announced, the award will be presented.

    The premiere of the work will be programmed by Phonos, the Xarxa de Músiques a Catalunya and Joventuts Musicals de Barcelona in one of their concert cycles and within the celebration acts related to Phonos’ 50th anniversary.

    The composer may submit a multi-channel version (with a maximum of 8 channels) of the award-winning work, only for the premiere.

    The concert may be recorded and broadcast on the Catalan radio station “Catalunya Música” or on other media decided by the organization.

    The intellectual property rights belong to the author. In future recordings and programmes, the following text must appear: “Frederic Mompou International Award in the Young Composer Competition organized by

    Joventuts Musicals de Barcelona, 2024.”

    A recording of the award-winning work will be made and disseminated primarily on social media. A copy of it will remain at the disposal of the winner.

    The winner must accept these points regardless of other earlier publishing or disseminating commitments.



    Participation in the competition implies total acceptance of these rules.
    Anything that has not been foreseen in these rules will be governed by the regulating rules of the local administration.
    In the event of any doubt or error in the translation, the Catalan version of these rules will be the legal and official version.
